Press Release: Condemnation of Unlawful Voting on Constitutional Changes

The Somali Democracy and Freedom Forum strongly condemns the irregularities witnessed during yesterday’s parliamentary session on procedural rules for impending constitutional changes. The voting process was marred by blatant disregard for parliamentary procedures, with the motion not subjected to thorough debate before a rushed final vote.
The conduct of Speaker Sheikh Aden Madobe, who neglected parliamentary procedures, demands urgent attention. Additionally, the presence of over a hundred National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) personnel in plain clothes, visibly carrying exposed pistols, raises concerns about the integrity of the voting process.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s deployment of government soldiers within the Parliament is alarming and echoes military coup tendencies, posing a direct threat to the democratic foundations of our nation. This intimidation not only jeopardizes the peace and security of Somalia but also empowers extremist groups like Al-Shabaab.
The Somali Democracy and Freedom Forum denounces the corrupted speaker Sheikh Aden Madobe and calls for a vote of no confidence against him. Swift and decisive action by the Parliament is imperative to rectify this breach of conduct.
Any constitutional changes must be pursued through a consensus among regional leaders and subject to a referendum, asserts the Somali Democracy and Freedom Forum. The current process lacks the necessary legitimacy and transparency for such critical decisions.
We call upon all Somali citizens and Members of Parliament to reject the validity of this illegal vote and unite against actions that could destabilize our nation. Additionally, we implore our international partners to stand in solidarity with the Somali people, opposing any dictatorial tendencies and supporting the pursuit of true democracy.
The Somali Democracy and Freedom Forum remains committed to the principles of democracy, justice, and peace, and we call on all stakeholders to join us in preserving the democratic values that define our great nation.
